I spent a day at the Laboratory of Biomechanics at the BRFAA of the Academy of Athens.

September 25, 2024 Athens, Greece

I had the privilege of spending an intensive day at the Laboratory of Biomechanics at the Academy of Athens, working alongside Dr. Dimitrios Sokolis, a leading researcher in cardiovascular and gastrointestinal biomechanics. This experience provided invaluable hands-on insight into the intricate world of soft tissue mechanics, with particular emphasis on esophageal biomechanics.

The laboratory visit was meticulously structured to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical experimental techniques. The day encompassed live tissue dissection, in-depth scientific discussions about residual stress mechanisms, and direct participation in biomechanical testing protocols that form the foundation of computational modeling in biomedical engineering.

Update: The complete methodology and detailed results of this work are available in the published paper in the Journal of Biomechanics. The related master’s thesis work of Efstathios Saparillas can be accessed through the NTUA Digital Library.
